Darwin Community Legal Service team present the artwork to MLAs Paul Kirby and Lauren Moss outside Parliament House
COTA NT, along with Darwin Community Legal Service, hosted an Elder Abuse Awareness Workshop on International Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Friday the 15th June. There were some thought-provoking videos presented regarding the financial abuse that our elder citizens experience. Financial abuse is mainly carried out by family members. Rather than the family senior being treated with love, respect and kindness they are emotionally blackmailed and disregarded. A wonderful painting “Respect Value Protect” was created by workshop participants with artist Sandra Kendal. This was later taken down to Parliament House and presented to MLAs Lauren Moss and Paul Kirby. (Elder Abuse Information line 1800 037 072).
There is less than one week until the new NT Concessions and the NT Seniors Recognition Schemes begin. Please remember to CONFIRM your details with the membership forms. One form has CURRENT on it and this is for people already on the scheme and who have also been grandfathered across on the scheme. You do not need to fill out any other forms as you will be moved over to both schemes.
The other form is for people who are not currently on the scheme and who are 65 or over. If you receive a Federal pension and you don’t presently have an NT Concessions Card, you will need to apply for this scheme. This includes people who are not eligible for the NT Concessions Scheme, but who would be eligible for the NT Seniors Recognition Scheme.
Please also remember that you have until December 2018 to confirm your details so don’t panic! Territory Families 1800 777 704 (web: ntconcessions.nt.gov.au).
We have also had a sneak peek at the Seniors Month Calendar and it is jam-packed with wonderful events. All these events will also be listed online on COTA NT’s Territory Seniors Calendar on our website so very soon, you too can see all these events and register. (Printed calendars available next month). Seniors Month is really a time to celebrate and communicate with friends and most of all, to enjoy!
