Marshall Perron

Marshall Perron National Press Club address 1996

Marshall Perron is a former Chief Minister of the Northern Territory of Australia, and responsible for the world’s first legislation to legalise voluntary assisted dying in restricted circumstances. The law came into effect in 1995 but was extinguished by federal legislation in 1996.

In 1996, Perron made a pioneering address to the National Press Club in Canberra prior to the Northern Territory legislation being extinguished. Much of what Perron said then remains relevant to the current situation regarding voluntary assisted dying legislation for the Northern Territory in 2023-2024.

“I urge everyone to please take the time to watch this timeless piece. Were Marshall Perron, to be invited again today to the NPC, I have no doubt that he could once again deliver this same speech, word for word. It is indeed a “historical strategic blueprint” for achieving VAD.” Jane Morris, VAD Advocate
