Seniors invited to try new netball format
8 Nov 2019
Netball NT, with the support of COTA NT, launched a free Walking Netball program for over 55s this week at the purpose-built, air-conditioned CDU Stadium in Marrarra.
This program is a modified version of netball designed for older players of any skill level and regardless of netball playing experience. Term 4 is a social competition – players simply register one-time online, then turn up to play on the day. It is a fun, social game played with friends with a focus on health and fitness and designed for individual registrations, so no-one need worry about finding a team.
The rules of the game are much the same as regular netball – a full-sized netball court is used with seven playing positions. Each game consists of four quarters, each lasting six minutes. The crucial difference is that players must never have both feet off the ground at once (i.e. no jumping or running).
“This is a great way for seniors to stay fit and active, to join in with a team activity and to have a lot of fun at the same time,” said Ian Harkness, CEO of Netball NT. “We invite all seniors to come along – from complete beginners to seasoned players. It’s meant to be fun, it’s meant to be social – we’ll even stop for a cup of tea and a biscuit halfway through each session!”
“COTA NT is delighted to support Walking Netball in the Territory,” said Sue Shearer, CEO of COTA NT. “We highly value programs that enable senior Territorians to enjoy sports regardless of age or ability. With the support of federal funding, COTA can support Walking Netball alongside activities such as seated aerobics and Tai Chi. We look forward to assisting Netball NT in promoting the program to Alice Springs in 2020.”
