Leading up to Seniors Month
11 Jun 2019

The Seniors Month August 2019 calendar events and activities will also be listed on the online calendar
We hope that all the organisations that are organising events for Seniors Month in August have now contacted COTA NT with their event details for inclusion in the printed 2019 Seniors Calendar. As we speak, it’s are off to production, but if you have missed this deadline, you can always put it on our online calendar as well. This is published on our website, www.cotant.org.au and includes more detail about each event.
Presently COTA NT is in Canberra at the organisation’s annual National Policy Council (NPC) where the policy agenda for lobbying and representing seniors at a federal level is set. Of major concern is still My Aged Care, housing, Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, dental health, pensions, superannuation, ageism plus a plethora of other issues that affect seniors and their ability to live a healthy, productive lifestyle.
We also spoke to Gerry Woods MLA, member for Nelson regarding the future of the INPEX site in Howard Springs. We agree with Gerry that the community should have a say in how this village is utilised but again, the running costs – especially if strata titling comes into play – really do have to be made public. COTA NT also met with a developer that is putting in an expression of interest for the Coolalinga lifestyle/retirement village. This is an exciting project and will give rural residents a fantastic place to retire and downsize too, whilst having a realistic price point as well.
We are organising a number of Seniors Month activities including our road trip – Darwin to Alice Springs, culminating in the Health and Wellbeing Expo at the Yeperenye Shopping Centre on Friday 16 August. We will also be stopping in Katherine and Tennant Creek to catch up with Territory seniors. We will keep you posted about the dates and details.
