Have your say against discrimination

Just a reminder that COTA NT’s survey is still available on line and hard copies available at COTA’s office. We have received over 850 responses so far – the survey closes tomorrow, so please drop by for a copy or visit our website to access it online.
Another issue reared its ugly head recently is that Territorians still working over the pension age are not entitled to compensation for loss of earning capacity under Section 13, subsection 5(a) of the Motor Accidents (Compensation) Act NT. Seniors who work and are over the pension age pay for their motor registration annually, and the registration fee includes a compulsory contribution to the MAC Scheme. Whilst we pay this fee, we can’t access compensation. COTA NT has written to the Chief Minister regarding this obvious discrimination. A petition is located at COTA NT’s offices in Darwin for seniors to sign. We thank Penni Tastula for bringing this to our attention.
COTA NT was delighted to hear that Janet Anderson has been appointed the first Aged-Care Quality and Safety Commissioner. Janet worked with various Territory government departments with the most recent being Territory Families. We wish her every success in the much-needed position. COTA NT will be attending the National Policy Council meeting in Canberra in early November, so we hope to catch up with Janet then. The policy meeting will be looking at national issues and one of them will be the delivery of My Aged Care package, the wait times and lack of funding for certain packages.
COTA NT recently held its AGM and there were no changes to our Board (as the Board is elected for a two-year period and the next elections won’t be until 2019). If you are a member of COTA and would like a copy of our AGM reports, please contact us.
