Find your GEM this August

31 Jul 2018

Seniors Month starts tomorrow and there is something for everybody! The COTA NT Coomalie branch holds their Seniors Picnic on Friday and a busload of Darwinites will be attending. I’m sure the picnic will be a fantastic occasion. There is also a Know Your Rights Forum held by Integrated Disability Action Group at the Nightcliff Community Centre on the 16th.  This is a very useful session, not just for people with a disability, but for all seniors who are unsure of exactly what they are entitled to. It includes information around consumer affairs, general public obligations, accessing legal assistance, accessing personal information and where/how to find other assistance if needed.

We’ll talk more about Seniors Month as events get underway, but calendars are about town and available online via our website of course. We are also posting updates about numerous Seniors Month activities on our Facebook page. There are even a few new events and dates to add to your calendar too.

COTA NT recently toured the new Palmerston Regional Hospital, which has a public open day on 11 August.  It was very impressive, especially the Geriatric Evaluation Medicine (GEM) unit for seniors.  A lot of thought has gone into this unit to make it as comfortable as possible and to ensure seniors get the best care while going through their rehab. The new hydrotherapy pool will also play a major role in assisting all Territorians with their particular rehab requirements. The outside areas are particularly well designed for people to take advantage of beautiful Dry Season weather while undertaking various exercises to improve their mobility.

Finally stay posted for news of where you can fill out our survey. It is very important that we obtain the facts and figures to enable us to lobby on your behalf for better outcomes for all seniors throughout the Northern Territory.
