Development of seniors’ village reaches a critical phase
26 Mar 2019
COTA NT had a meeting with staff from the Chief Minister’s Department and as mentioned previously, the plans for the Seniors Village have moved to a critical phase. The NT government plans to announce the selected developer before the end of the calendar year if possible. We hope that the developer can bring this seniors’ lifestyle village in at the right price for seniors to buy a home there. At our meetings with NT Government, COTA NT stipulated that the price for these retirement village homes had to be $300,000 and below, otherwise in this current market if seniors wish to sell their current property, they won’t have enough equity to buy in. Likewise, for seniors who are not in the home ownership market and could be buying their first home by using their super, the prices must be kept down. COTA NT has had discussions with two local developers regarding more senior-lifestyle accommodation, coupled with aged care and dementia facilities, all of which are much needed.
Elder abuse counselling support to start in June
COTA NT was also pleased to meet with staff from Relationships Australia, who have now been funded by the Federal Government to provide much needed counselling for families involved with or experiencing elder abuse. This is a much-needed service and Relationships Australia will be providing experts in counselling in not just Darwin, but Katherine and Alice Springs as well. They are still in the process of recruiting staff, but the service should be up and running in the next few months.
Better access to aged care
Our Aged Care Navigators are also busy assisting seniors in accessing government aged care supports through My Aged Care. If you would like information or help or would like to make an appointment to talk to our Aged Care Navigator in the Darwin region, please contact us on 8941 1004 and ask for Janet.
