COTA NT, the peak advocacy body for over 50s in the Northern Territory has launched the first ever Grandparents Day for the NT.
Grandparents Day is about celebrating the love, respect and gratitude held for grandparents and older kin in our Territory. It is about making sure grandparents and older kin get support and recognition for what they have done and continue to do for their families, friends, and communities.
“This is an important milestone for our organisation,” said Sue Shearer, CEO of COTA NT. “We have been working towards a Grandparents Day event for the Northern Territory since 2014. Thanks to the support of Territory Families, Housing and Communities and our sponsors, nbn and Life Without Barriers, we are proud to announce the first ever Grandparents Day for the NT on Sunday 31 October.”
The organisation launched NT Grandparents Day with Minister Kate Worden, Minister for Territory Families, its Patron Her Honour the Honourable Vicki O’Halloran AM, Administrator of the Northern Territory and key sponsors, nbn and Life Without Barriers. The launch included the announcement of a “I love Grandie” competition for Primary School children and a special NT Grandparents Day event. This competition is open to children throughout the Northern Territory. They can submit a creative piece of work simply saying why they love their grandparents and older kin in one of two categories, an ‘anything goes’ General Category and a special nbn Category for digital artwork.
More details about the competition and event are available on COTA NT’s new website, www.ntgrandparentsday.org.au. Also available on the website is a free Community Resources Kit to help people celebrate NT Grandparents Day, and valuable information on how to get support and help if you are a grandparent or older carer.
