Our biggest event of the year – our Seniors Expo last week was an outstanding success, exceeding the numbers of both stall holder numbers and attendees from past expos. It was a fantastic day and the opportunity for seniors in the greater Darwin area to get together and celebrate. The ladies from Katherine who chartered their own bus also enjoyed the day and will be back next year. One of the highlights of the day was the presentation of COTA NT’s ‘Tales of Tracy’ publication. The idea to collate and interview seniors who had been here when Cyclone Tracy struck was that of past CEO of COTA NT, Robyn Lesley. This book is dedicated to Robyn and is a tribute to the seniors who survived Tracy. The book was four years in the making as the editor, our own Stephanie Kendall, wanted to ensure that all the stories were given the justice they richly deserve. Copies of the book were presented to the City of Darwin actually funded the project, City of Palmerston, the NT Library and our patron of COTA NT, the Administrator of the Northern Territory, Her Honour, Mrs Vicki O’Halloran, AM.
The NT Seniors Card Business Directory was also officially launched in Alice Springs yesterday. Advance copies were also available at the Seniors Expo. The directory will be distributed to local MLAs, libraries, local councils in regional areas and other areas that are accessible for seniors. We envisage taking this directory to print each year. Businesses can still have their listing live on the Seniors Card website and seniors should also check the website, as we will be adding more and more business that realise the value of our seniors.
It never stops here at COTA NT, we will now be concentrating on the Seniors Calendar for Seniors Month, and we will be contacting all the successful recipients of the grants from Territory Families. If you are having an event and weren’t successful, or didn’t apply for one, please contact to ensure that your event is listed in the Seniors Calendar.
