COTA NT is urging Territorians to contact their elected representatives to revive the momentum created for a legislative framework for voluntary assisted dying laws in the Northern Territory. It is time.
Our recently elected representatives have much to contend with in their new roles and it would be easy for this discussion to be brushed aside. After so much work from not only the Expert Panel appointed by the government but by the community, it is time to take action on these laws. We are sadly lagging behind the rest of Australia and the opinion of Territorians has been made clear in the VAD report.
To quote the Co-Chairs’ Letter, “we believe we should convey to you a strong body of opinion that has been expressed during the consultation period, that there should be legislation to enable a person, whilst they still have capacity to express in an advance personal plan/health directive, a wish to access voluntary assisted dying in preparation for their end-of-life.”
