Tips for writing to your Member of Parliament

You can call or email your Member of Parliament, but it you want to keep a clear record of your communication, an email or letter sent through the post or hand delivered (preferably copied before it’s sent) is advisable.

TIP: As many Northern Territory representatives spend a lot of time travelling due to the geographic nature of the Northern Territory, ‘dropping’ into a physical office may be much slower than email.

Tips to get a fast and helpful reply from a Member of Parliament

What gets your email read The first thing that gets read by Members’ staff is the letter or email subject line. Be clear immediately that you are a constituent with a subject line reading, Concern from constituent about …..[topic]

In your communication:

  • prove immediately that you live in their electorate by including or stating your full postal address (you can also include town, community or town camp) at the very top of your message
  • include your full name
  • focus on one topic to make your message easy to read and answer
  • keep your message short and straight to the point
  • be polite, avoid angry language or threats
  • end with a direct question about their stance or what action they plan to take.
