As we age, looking after our health becomes more important than ever – and that includes our teeth.

But right now, too many older Australians are being forced to put off essential oral and dental care simply because they can’t afford it. In fact, recent research from the Australian Dental Association found that more than half of Australians (55%) over 65 have delayed dental treatment in the past year. That’s not just unfair – it’s dangerous. Poor oral health puts us at greater risk of serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes, malnutrition and social isolation.

That’s why COTA Australia has long called for the introduction of a Seniors Dental Benefit Scheme – to ensure we can make quality, affordable dental care a reality for all older Australians. With the federal election just weeks away, we’ve got a chance to pressure our political parties – and our local candidates – to finally deliver a Seniors Dental Benefit Scheme.
