The Finocchiaro CLP Government is developing a new Territory-wide Housing Strategy to guide how housing is planned and delivered across the NT.

The Strategy is intended to strengthen the housing system to support economic growth, workforce participation and safe, connected communities by increasing supply and improving access.

As part of this work, the Government is inviting Territorians, communities, industry, service providers and other stakeholders to share their views at www.haveyoursay.nt.gov.au until 17 April 2026.

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Community Development, Steve Edgington, said the feedback would help identify what is working well, where the main opportunities are, and where future effort should be focused.

“We want Territorians to help shape a Housing Strategy that reflects local experience, regional priorities and the real challenges people face across the Territory.

“We need housing that keeps up, backs workers and families, and delivers real results in our suburbs, regions and remote communities.

“Housing is key to tackling the root causes of crime and lifting outcomes in health, education and jobs—so our strategy must reflect what Territorians want,” Mr Edgington said.

The Strategy will focus on five key areas:

  • housing supply across private, social, affordable and remote housing
  • the construction and development system
  • regional and remote housing needs and aspirations
  • affordability and access
  • social housing and asset performance.

The Territory’s housing system operates in a unique environment, with vastly different conditions across Darwin, regional centres and remote communities.

The Strategy is intended to provide the guardrails for a coordinated response from government, industry and communities.

Consultation is open until Friday 17 April 2026. Territorians can have their say by visiting www.haveyoursay.nt.gov.au

The $120 million Homelands Housing and Infrastructure Program (HHIP) is an agreement with the Australian Government to deliver urgent repairs and upgrades in homelands.
