2026 Assisted Pick-Up Service for eligible residents in Darwin

19 Aug 2026

City of Darwin is providing a limited Assisted Pick-Up Service in 2026 to support eligible residents who may have difficulty removing outdoor items from their property that could become hazards during cyclone season.

While the municipal-wide 2026 Pre-Cyclone Clean-up has been postponed, and the next outdoor hard waste collection will take place in May 2027, City of Darwin recognises that some residents may be unable to independently remove outdoor items from their property that could pose a risk during a cyclone.

To be eligible for the 2026 Assisted Pick-Up Service, residents must meet all four of the following criteria:

  • reside within the City of Darwin municipality
  • have limited physical or mental capacity to remove unwanted outdoor items and hold a current Disability Support Pension card or a current doctor’s certificate for:
    • disability, age-related frailty, mental illness, chronic illness, injury, recovery from surgery or another medical condition
  • have no household member who is reasonably able to undertake the work safely; and
  • have no reasonable access to informal or community support to undertake the work.

What can the service help with?
The service assists eligible residents to remove existing outdoor items that could become cyclone hazards.
Collections can be made from accessible outdoor areas such as yards, driveways, carports and verandas.

The service cannot remove items from inside homes, garages, sheds or other enclosed areas.

What items can be collected?
Residents should review the full list of accepted and prohibited items before booking. A complete list of eligible and ineligible items is available at darwin.nt.gov.au/assisted-pickup.

How to make a booking
Residents who meet the eligibility criteria can:

1. Complete the booking form either online or in person at the City of Darwin Civic Centre or any of the City of Darwin libraries.
2. Wait for a City of Darwin Officer to review the application and contact them within five working days to advise the outcome and, if approved, confirm their collection window.

Bookings are open from Monday 10 August to Friday 4 September 2026, or until all places are filled.
Assisted pick-ups will take place from 31 August through to early October 2026.
