If you’re finding it difficult to live in your current home for health reasons, or you no longer need the space, you may be considering changing your housing arrangements.

Some options include:

  • moving into a smaller home
  • living with family
  • purchasing a place in a retirement village
  • applying for aged care.

You may be able to access in-home support to help you to stay longer in your current home. Your local Aged Care Assessment Team could advise you about your options. They can help you work out what type of care will suit you and assess whether you’re eligible for:

  • COTA NT Bidding for Senior Territorians 2020 – Included six calls for action including: Liveable communities – that foster social participation of older people: i.e. appropriate housing which provides social interaction and Planning for change – providing appropriate retirement and planning options in regional areas.

NT Housing strategy

  • Northern Territory Housing Strategy 2020-2025 – A home for all Territorians –this housing strategy was officially released in December 2019 by the Northern Territory Government. The vision of the strategy is a home for all Territorians – housing that enables social and economic well being and strong communities.

Lifestyle accommodation – The NT Government’s vision is for senior Territorians to remain in the Territory and be able to transition into appropriate accommodation by ‘downsizing’ and ‘rightsizing’ if they wish. The NT Government is also considering operating structures for these accommodation options and keen to ensure that these maximise consumer protections (more)
