The Northern Territory (NT) Pensioner and Carer Concession Scheme provides financial subsidies as concessions to members for a range of goods and services. Concessions help people on low incomes access important services such as water, energy, transport and housing. The scheme aims to: provide an incentive for members to stay in the NT during retirement and help all pensioners, certain categories of low-income earners and carers with a range of cost of living expenses.
As a member you can receive concessions on a range of cost of living expenses including:electricity – on-grid, off-grid, pre-paid tokens and e-token meters, water rates,sewerage rates,property rates,garbage collection charges,motor vehicle registration, driver licences, spectacles, public transport and interstate and overseas travel. Other concessions are also available including stamp duty for first home buyers and the Seniors Card, which is issued free and provides access to savings on a range of goods and services from participating businesses.
You are eligible for concessions if you are a permanent resident of the NT and hold an eligible Department of Human Services or Centrelink concession card or an eligible Department of Veterans’ Affairs concession card. You must make sure you are eligible for a travel concession before leaving for your trip. Before making your travel arrangements contact the Pensioner and Carer Concession Unit. The travel concession is for members that have one of the following concession cards:
You need to have lived in the Northern Territory (NT) for at least two years before you travel to get a concession. The travel concession is available every two years from the start date of your last travel concession. The concession applies to any form of transport, including private vehicle. The disability support pension is a Centrelink payment for people who are permanently blind, or have a physical, intellectual or psychiatric condition that stops them from working. Australian Disabled Parking Permit – The City of Darwin administers the Australian Disabled Parking Permit Scheme for people with mobility limitations and in need of special parking consideration. The applicants must be assessed by a medical practitioner as mobility restricted. The scheme entitles the usage of designated parking throughout the municipality and allows extended parking in all time restricted bay and free parking on-street where Council parking meters are installed.
Rates and Garbage Charges – For holders of the NT Pensioner and Carer Concession Card, a concession is available on City of Darwin Council rates and charges. this concession is approved and provided by the Northern territory Department of Health, NT pensioner and Carer Concession Scheme to be eligible for the concession, the member must be the legal owner/part owner of the property, occupy the property and must have declared the property as their principal place of residence.
